10km Races, Smoothies, and Crazy Pants.

Pic of my race-day pants from my Instagram feed (@essaieblog) this week.
I'm running in a 10km run tomorrow.

I'm super-excited!
Because: how exhilarating to push yourself to accomplish something that is difficult! And I get to run in the mountains, with my sister, in fun pants and a fun shirt and for a good cause. The weather is going to be beautiful (...right, Weather!?), and also: endorphins. I'm excited to check this off my list of things I've always wanted to try.

And I'm super-nervous.
Because: Um...can I even make it? I mean, I've been "training" and all, but this is definitely going to be TOUGH for me to finish. I've only started running regularly in the past few months, and my body is a little mad at me for not doing more of it throughout the last year. I signed up for the 10k with the intention that it would be something I could do...finish at least.....What was I thinking!!!?? I am going to be the one that is laying on the ground, face-down at kilometre 7, wetting the pavement with my tears. I am totally going to be the one grabbing at people's ankles, begging them to just let me hitch a ride, "just drag me along behind you!!!" And I will definitely be the one who is crawling across the finish line to crickets chirping because everyone has gone home already. OR WORSE, give up and not finish at all.

But I'm doing it anyways.
Because: I want to. I want to be proud of myself for doing something difficult, facing something that is scary, overcoming my irrational fears. I want to challenge my mind, as well as my body, to push itself to believe I can do this. I want to practice ignoring the voices in my head that are worried about what people will think about my terrible finishing time, or my excessively sweaty and beet-red face that clearly reveals the truth that this was really difficult for me. I want to remember to be kind to myself when I actually feel proud of a terrible run time because I am so unpracticed, but finished anyway! I want to push my limits. And I also want the rad gift bag from Rocky Mountain Soap Company at the end.

I've been drinking some variation or another of this smoothie on run days. I drink half-ish before and the rest after my run as a recovery drink.

Do-Something-Crazy Green Smoothie
-Large handful of baby kale (any leafy greens would work)
-1/2 cup plain yogurt
-1 large frozen banana
-1-2 heaping Tablespoons natural peanut butter
-1-2 Tablespoons maple syrup (to taste)
-2-3 cups almond milk
-2ish teaspoons chia seeds
-1/2-1 tsp Bee Pollen (start with less if you don't usually have been pollen)
-couple drops vanilla extract

Blend it up reeeeally well. Drink up. Then go amaze yourself by doing something crazy, like signing up for a 10km run...ha!
